A Kenyan court has sentenced a
member of the al-Shabab militant group to a total of 80 years in prison. Resident magistrate Joyce Gandani found
24-year-old Abdi Rizzack Muktar Edow guilty of seven charges
relating to terrorism and planning attacks against Kenya. Muktar was
sentenced to 20 years in jail on the first count of supporting and recruiting
al-Shabab members. He will also serve 10 years for each of the remaining
six counts which are related to possession of terror-related
paraphernalia. The sentences will run concurrently. The prosecution said Muktar’s
car was used during a June 2014 al-Shabab attack on the northern town of
Mandera.
