GOP candidate's wife issues unprecedented rebuke of her husband
Donald Trump’s wife condemned his lewd comments about women that were revealed on video , saying in a statement released by the Trump campaign that she hopes the nation will accept his apology.
“The words my husband used are unacceptable and offensive to me,” Mrs. Trump said. “This does .not represent the man that I know. He has the heart and mind of a leader. I hope people will accept his apology, as I have, and focus on the important issues facing our nation and the world.”
Mrs. Trump’s statement represents the latest extraordinary step in the Trump campaign’s damage-control efforts. Never in modern presidential politics has a candidate’s spouse publicly rebuked them.
The Trumps were married months before the video of Mr. Trump bragging about his sexual exploits with other women was recorded. At the time of the recording Mrs. Trump was pregnant with the couple’s son, Barron.
Donald
Trump, under pressure to step aside as the Republican presidential candidate
after the disclosure of his having made lewd comments about women, said in an
interview with The Wall Street Journal on Saturday that there is “zero chance
I’ll quit.”
